Real state of backups

## Backups aren’t something you discover on incident day.

A backup is only worth the restore it makes possible. We spot the most common blind spots at SMEs in French-speaking Switzerland, and we fix them.

### The backup is in the same room as the server

A flood, a fire, a theft, and the copy disappears with the original. A real backup leaves the building.

### Off-site backup, encrypted

An extra copy ships every night to a datacenter in Switzerland. End-to-end encrypted. Unreachable from the office.

### A NAS is not a backup

A permanently connected Synology stays exposed to ransomware, accidental deletion and simultaneous disk failure.

### Backup isolated from the network, optionally immutable

The backup system keeps copies out of the network’s reach. As an option, they become unerasable, even by an administrator.

### Microsoft 365 doesn’t back everything up by default

Microsoft guarantees service availability. Recovering an email deleted three months ago, a OneDrive file or a SharePoint site remains your responsibility.

### Third-party Microsoft 365 backup

Mail, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams are backed up independently of Microsoft. Granular restore, 365 days minimum.

### Backups are never verified

A backup job marked "successful" proves nothing. Without documented verification, you’ll discover the problem on incident day.

### Coherence check every month, documented

Each month, a coherence check confirms the backups are complete and recoverable. The result is logged. If something breaks, we know in time.

### Ransomware can encrypt anything reachable

If the backup is mounted, shared or simply reachable from the network, it can be encrypted alongside production data.

### Copies out of reach, optionally immutable

As an option, backup copies become immutable for the retention period. Ransomware can encrypt everything, it cannot touch them.

### No one knows how long restart would take

No defined recovery time, no written procedure, no owner. On D-day, everyone improvises, and the bill grows by the hour.

### Recovery objectives defined, written procedure

Recovery time and acceptable data loss are defined with you. An owner is named. The procedure is written and kept up to date.

Avepto adapts the scope to your real infrastructure. No tool imposed, no contractual lock-in beyond the service term.

### Trust offices & accounting firms

Closings, payroll and tax filings: a single day without the files and the whole firm grinds to a halt.

### Medical practices & clinics

Patient records and medical confidentiality: neither data loss nor a compliance gap is an option.

### Architecture & engineering offices

Plans, models and live projects: heavy, versioned files that cannot simply be redone.

### B2B service companies

Contracts, deliverables and client relationships: your commercial memory has to survive any incident.

### Small industrial businesses

Production, orders and shop-floor plans: every IT outage is paid for immediately in revenue.

### Law firms & notaries

Confidential files, deeds and archives: legal retention obligations that tolerate no failure.

3-2-1 strategy

## Three copies. Two media. One off-site location. Zero surprises.

Several copies, on distinct media, one of them off-site. That’s the foundation of a backup that truly withstands the unexpected.

3 Copies of data

2 Distinct media

1 Off-site location

01

Production

### Working data

Servers, workstations, NAS, Microsoft 365

The environment used every day. Synced, shared, in motion.

On client site

02

Local backup

### Fast local copy

Appliance or dedicated storage

Instant restore of a file, an email, a VM. Isolated from the domain.

On site, isolated

03

Off-site

### Off-site copy

Data centre in Switzerland, optional immutability

Survives fire, theft, disaster. Off-site, managed by Avepto.

Common questions

## Your questions on backing up your data.

Everything we are asked about backup and recovery, gathered in one place.

### Is a Synology NAS enough as a backup for an SME?

NAS limits and the 3-2-1 rule

No. A NAS stays connected to the network, in the same building, and faces the same risks as the original data: ransomware, theft, water damage, simultaneous disk failure. A NAS can be part of a backup strategy but doesn’t constitute one on its own.

### Does Microsoft 365 really back up an SME’s data?

Native scope of Microsoft 365

No, not really. Microsoft operates under a shared responsibility model: your data belongs to you, and protecting it is up to you. Accidental deletion, ransomware, a misconfiguration, a departing employee: those cases stay on your side. What Microsoft provides is retention, not a backup. Depending on your licences and settings, it keeps data for 14 to 90 days. And that retention is built for compliance and information lifecycle management, not for fast recovery after an incident. That is why Avepto backs up your Microsoft 365 separately.

### Where should a small or medium-sized business’s backups be stored?

Local copy and Swiss datacentre

In two locations. A local copy on your premises for fast restores, and an off-site copy in a datacentre in Switzerland, encrypted; immutability is available as an option. Your data does not leave Swiss territory and stays subject to Swiss law. Avepto runs both copies and checks that they complete correctly.

### How long does it take to restore an SME’s server?

Restore times and RTO

It depends on the volume, the type of failure and the recovery time objective (RTO) chosen. A file takes a few minutes. A virtual machine (VM), 30 minutes to several hours. A full physical server, generally 2 to 8 hours. Avepto sets this objective with you and checks that it stays realistic.

### Is the backup compatible with an SME’s Macs?

Mac, PC and mixed environments

Yes. Avepto backs up Macs, PCs, Windows servers, Linux, hypervisors and mixed environments alike. Our SME clients rarely run a single system, and the backup covers every device under one contract. You get uniform protection, whatever hardware your teams use.
